Analysts Compare Current Crypto Market Pressure to Dot-Com Aftermath
Crypto prices remain under pressure as large holders and long-term investors continue to sell, according to market analysts. This increased supply is meeting subdued demand, a combination that is keeping prices suppressed.
Whales and Veteran Investors Drive the Trend
Jordi Visser, a noted market analyst, drew parallels between the current crypto environment and the period following the early 2000s dot-com stock market crash. He cited selling by early investors after mandated lock-up periods as a similar mechanism in both cases. In the dot-com era, stocks dropped by up to 80% and then underwent years of consolidation before eventually regaining their previous peaks.
Visser clarified that while the current consolidation in crypto is significant, he does not expect the recovery period to last as long as the 16 years seen after the dot-com crash. Instead, he suggested that the winding-down phase could finish within the next year.
Market Uncertainty and Lowered Forecasts
The analysis comes as some fear a potential decline in crypto and Bitcoin valuations. Several analysts and investment firms have revised previously optimistic price targets downward due to persistent sell-side pressure.
Key Dynamics: Demand and Supply Balance
Long-term holders and whales often sell near market highs. Julio Moreno, an analyst at CryptoQuant, indicated that the impact of such selling depends on whether market demand can match the released supply. "Since October, long-term holder selling has increased; nothing new here, but demand is contracting, unable to absorb long-term holder supply at a higher price," he said.
- Market consolidation continues as big players sell holdings
- Demand has weakened, failing to counterbalance renewed supply
- Analysts suggest the current phase may last up to another year
As selling by major holders persists in an environment of softening demand, markets may remain strained until new investors enter or broader sentiment shifts.
