Starknet Restores Block Production Following Hours-Long Outage

Starknet, an Ethereum layer 2 network, resumed normal operations Tuesday after an outage disrupted block production and halted onchain transactions for several hours. The network's developers confirmed the restoration in an update on X and through renewed blockchain activity, as most remote procedure call (RPC) providers returned online and nodes completed required upgrades.

Service Disruptions and Recovery Efforts

The outage began early Tuesday, with Starknet reporting downtime affecting its zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup operations. Onchain activity was paused while the team investigated the root cause. As developers worked to stabilize the network, a chain reorganization was committed from block number 1,960,612, which included about one hour's worth of activity.

  • All transactions submitted between approximately 2:23 a.m. and 4:36 a.m. UTC were not processed onchain during the incident.
  • Developers advised users to resubmit any affected transactions.

Starknet assured its community that a full analysis of the incident will be published, including a detailed timeline, identification of the root cause, and long-term steps to prevent a recurrence.

Background and Previous Network Status

Starknet's outage comes as the project launches new development initiatives, including consensus upgrades and support for app chain development. The network, designed to increase Ethereum's throughput and lower fees by bundling transactions offchain and confirming them on Ethereum, had established a reputation for stability. According to QuickNode data, Starknet maintained 100% uptime in recent months apart from a 15-minute interruption in July.

The last comparable unplanned outage occurred on April 5, 2024a four-hour disruption caused by a rounding error bug that also led to a chain reorganization.

The Starknet team expects to share further details on the latest incident in an upcoming retrospective, addressing community concerns and reinforcing trust amid ongoing updates to network operations.
