PayPay Acquires 40% Equity in Binance Japan
PayPay, the mobile payments platform backed by SoftBank Group, has acquired a 40% equity stake in Binance Japan. The deal marks a significant step toward integrating crypto services with one of Japans largest digital payment providers. Following the transaction, Binance Japan will become an equity-method affiliate of PayPay as of September 2025, both companies announced on Thursday.
Integrated Services Planned
In the wake of this acquisition, PayPay and Binance Japan plan to launch new services that will allow clients of the crypto exchange to buy and sell digital assets using PayPay Money. This move aims to increase convenience for users by blending everyday digital payments with crypto asset transactions.
"Through its continued evolution from a cashless payments business into a digital financial platform, PayPay will strive to deliver new value to users while contributing to the advancement of Japans financial infrastructure," PayPay said in the announcement.
PayPay's corporate officer, Masayoshi Yanase, added, "By investing in Binance Japan, which is a part of Binance, the worlds largest digital asset exchange by trading volume, we will provide Binance users with solutions that combine the convenience and security of PayPay."
Growth and Reach of PayPay
PayPay reported reaching 70 million users in July 2025. In 2024, the company processed at least 380 million transactions, marking a 36% increase from 2023. This volume surpasses the 7.5% rise seen in bank transfer transactions, underlining PayPay's growing footprint in Japan's payment market.
Operational Impact and Future Plans
According to Binance Japan, users can already deposit and withdraw Japanese yen via bank transfers. The added PayPay payment option will further expand available methods and boost operational convenience. Takeshi Chino, general manager of Binance Japan, stated, "By combining PayPays extensive user scale with Binances innovative technology, we will make Web3 more accessible and deliver secure, seamless digital asset services across Japan."
Broader Expansion Efforts
PayPay has recently announced the launch of its payment service in South Korea and confidentially filed for listing American depositary shares with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in August. Information on the timing and pricing of this listing remains undisclosed, pending market conditions.
BNB Token Performance
The deal follows strong performance in BNB, Binances native token. BNB traded around $1,300 on Thursday, up 26% over seven days, with a market capitalization of about $182 billion, according to CoinGecko.
