Retail Investors Increase Bitcoin Holdings Amid Whale Sell-Off
Retail investors have started accumulating Bitcoin as larger holders, known as whales, move to sell. This divergence is drawing attention from analysts, who are debating future price trends for the leading cryptocurrency.
Whale and Retail Activity Shift
According to blockchain analytics platform Santiment, Bitcoin wallets holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC have sold approximately 32,500 coins since October 12. Meanwhile, small retail wallets have taken the opportunity to buy the dip. This period saw Bitcoin fall from $115,000 to $98,000 by November 4, a decrease of about 15%, before rebounding to $103,780 at the time of publication.
Santiments recent report noted, A major divergence has appeared between large and small investors. Historically, Santiment added, Bitcoins price tends to follow the direction of whale activity, not retail investors.
Mixed Analyst Perspectives
- Bitfinex analysts told Cointelegraph that Bitcoin may enter a period of price consolidation and volatility. They pointed to several factors, including macroeconomic influences, a significant options expiration, and recent profit-taking. These, combined with earlier inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs, caused volatility in mid-October.
- Data from Farside revealed that spot Bitcoin ETFs broke a six-day outflow streak on Friday, during which over $2 billion exited the market. Bitfinex believes that if ETF inflows return to more than $1 billion weekly and conditions improve, Bitcoin could climb toward $130,000.
- Nansen senior research analyst Jake Kennis stated that, despite past year-over-year gains, recent liquidations and changes in market structure make further upside less probable in the short term. However, he acknowledged the possibility of new all-time highs this year if market momentum shifts.
Outlook for Bitcoin
The divergence between retail buying and whale selling has created uncertainty for Bitcoins near-term trajectory. While some anticipate potential gains if positive momentum returns, most analysts agree that price consolidation and continued volatility remain likely for now.
