Justice Minister Resigns Amid Bitcoin Donation Scandal

Controversial Crypto Gift Triggers Political Fallout in Czech Republic

Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blazek resigned on May 30, 2025, following revelations that his ministry accepted and sold 480 BTC—valued at approximately $45 million—donated by a convicted drug trafficker and former operator of the dark web marketplace Sheep Marketplace.

The ministry auctioned the bitcoins, intending to fund projects like justice system digitization and prison improvements. However, the donation's origin sparked public outrage and allegations of money laundering.

Political Repercussions and Investigations

Opposition parties accused Blazek of legitimizing criminal proceeds. The National Headquarters for Combating Organized Crime has launched an investigation into the donation's legality. Prime Minister Petr Fiala accepted Blazek's resignation, aiming to mitigate damage to the ruling coalition ahead of the October 2025 parliamentary elections.

Blazek's Defense and Public Response

Blazek claimed he acted legally, viewing the donation as a form of penance. He stated, "I have no way to investigate the matter, and I wasn’t interested so many years after the case." Despite his defense, public and political pressure led to his resignation.
