Market Watch

Zcash Surges as Privacy Token Demand Increases

Zcash (ZEC), a leading privacy-focused cryptocurrency, has reached its highest price in over eight years, signaling renewed investor interest in privacy coins. The digital asset briefly surged to $388 on Friday, gaining 7.6% in the prior 24 hours, according to data from CoinMarketCap.

Zcash Overtakes Monero in Market Capitalization

Recent price action pushed ZEC's market capitalization to $6.2 billion, allowing it to surpass Monero (XMR) and become the most valuable privacy coin. The move comes amid broader weakness in the digital asset market, as ongoing consolidation followed an unresolved tariff agreement between the US and China.

Investor Appetite Grows for Privacy Solutions

Privacy coins like Zcash and Monero are designed to increase transaction anonymity. Unlike Bitcoin, where transactions are traceable on-chain, these tokens obscure details such as sender, receiver, and transaction amounts, enhancing user privacy.

The renewed attention to privacy tokens comes shortly after Arthur Hayes, BitMEX co-founder, issued a bullish forecast for ZEC. Following his remarks, the tokens price rose from $272 to a high of $355, as reported by Cointelegraph.

On-Chain Activity Reflects Shifting Holdings

  • The number of individual ZEC holders jumped 63% to 1,968 in the past week.
  • Despite increased demand, large investors, or whales, sold a net total of $702,000 in ZEC during this period, according to crypto intelligence platform Spot On Chain.

Market Outlook

The ZEC rally stands out in contrast to most cryptocurrencies, which have lagged in price performance under current market conditions. The token's growth highlights a possible shift in investor priorities toward greater digital privacy amid continued scrutiny and regulatory uncertainty.
