Western Union Reveals Solana-Based Stablecoin Platform Plans
Western Union has announced its intention to build a stablecoin settlement system on the Solana blockchain. The US Dollar Payment Token (USDPT) and a supporting Digital Asset Network will launch in partnership with Anchorage Digital Bank, the company revealed during its recent third-quarter earnings call.
Stablecoin Launch Set for 2026
The company expects to release USDPT in the first half of 2026. Access will be provided through partner exchanges to broaden user reach. According to Western Union, the approach mirrors how stablecoins such as PayPal USD are listed on major exchanges like Binance.
Supporting More Than 150 Million Customers
The Digital Asset Network is designed to serve as a cash off-ramp for Western Unions large customer base, which covers over 200 countries and territories. The new system aims to facilitate global transfers with digital assets, offering an alternative to legacy financial rails.
Solana Chosen for Institutional Readiness
Western Union CEO Devin McGranahan explained that Solana was chosen after evaluating various blockchain options. He cited Solanas readiness for institutional applications as the key factor in the decision, stating, We looked at alternatives, and came to the conclusion that Solana was the right choice.
Remittance Industry Embraces Blockchain
Traditional payment services are increasingly integrating blockchain for cross-border transactions. Blockchain proponents highlight its speed, lower costs, and increased transparency over traditional payment systems.
Other companies also made moves recently. Zelles parent company disclosed its own blockchain settlement plans, while MoneyGram announced new USDC wallet integration for its users in September.
Regulation Spurs Stablecoin Activity
Growing interest in stablecoins follows recent regulatory developments in the United States. President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law in July, clarifying stablecoin regulations and prompting Western Union to proceed with its initiative. Previously, Western Union cited market volatility and regulatory uncertainty as reasons for avoiding crypto.
The US Treasury Department estimated the stablecoin markets value in April and expects further growth. Western Unions strategy aligns with a rising trend of financial institutions entering the digital asset sector.
