Pavel Durov Recalls Arrest, Calls Investigation Unfounded
Pavel Durov, founder of the messaging platform Telegram, has reflected on his arrest one year ago by French authorities. In a statement shared on Telegram, Durov said investigators have yet to find evidence of wrongdoing against him or the company.
Background of the Arrest
Durov was detained by French officials on August 24, 2024. He was later charged with 12 counts, including complicity in crimes such as money laundering and the distribution of illegal content through the Telegram app. The arrest was notable, sparking global headlines and rallying support from the broader crypto community.
In his latest statement, Durov said, Arresting a CEO of a major platform over the actions of its users was not only unprecedented it was legally and logically absurd.
Legal Proceedings Ongoing
Durov explained that the criminal investigation remains unresolved. He continues to face strict bail conditions and is required to return to France every 14 days pending further legal action. There is currently no confirmed appeal date.
Following a decision from a French appeals court, Durov may leave metropolitan France only to Dubaiwhere Telegram is headquartered and where his family resides. Each trip is limited to 14 consecutive days and must be reported to authorities in advance. Travel to other destinations requires additional judicial approval.
Impact on Telegram and TON
Telegram is closely integrated with The Open Network (TON), whose native cryptocurrency, Toncoin, ranks within the top twenty-five digital assets by market capitalization. Web3 activity on Telegram is substantial, and active addresses on TON surged in the weeks after Durov's arrest, according to market data, though engagement has eased since.
Toncoin has also been incorporated into the treasury of digital asset firm Verb Technology, which has signaled plans to rebrand as Ton Strategy Company.
Community and Industry Response
The incident remains significant as Telegram plays a central role in the global crypto ecosystem through its Web3 integrations. The continued investigation into Durov and the company is followed closely by market participants and advocates for digital platform accountability.
