Starknet Mainnet Experiences Extended Service Disruption

Starknet, one of Ethereums leading layer-2 scaling solutions, encountered a significant outage on its mainnet on Tuesday. The disruption lasted for two hours and 44 minutes and led to stalled block production and slowed transaction processing across the network. This incident marks the second major outage on Starknet within the past two months.

Sequencer Issues Trigger Network Downtime

The outage originated from Starknets sequencer, a component responsible for organizing transactions and ensuring their inclusion in blocks. During the incident, the network was unable to recognize the Cairo0 code, which caused transactions to stagnate and block creation to slow significantly.

Restoration Efforts and Impacts

Starknets operators acted to restore the network, bringing it back online less than three hours after the disruption began. According to statements from a community-run communication account, transactions submitted between 2:23 am and 4:36 am UTC were not processed. To resume normal operations, a blockchain reorganization was initiated from block 1960612, affecting about one hour of activity. Users with transactions in this interval are required to resubmit them.

Previous Outage and Ongoing Reliability Concerns

Starknet had previously suffered a shorter outage on July 18, which impacted the network for about 13 minutes. Both incidents have raised concerns among investors and developers regarding the platforms stability, especially given that Starknet currently holds around $548 million in total value locked, according to industry data.

Background on Starknet and L2 Scaling Solutions

Starknet employs STARK proofs to provide high-throughput, low-cost transactions that help scale the Ethereum mainnet. As an L2 network, Starknet processes transactions offchain before finalizing them on Ethereum, improving speed and capacity for users.

The team behind Starknet has announced that a detailed timeline, including the root cause and proposed long-term fixes, will be published. Industry observers are closely monitoring further updates while reviewing the networks approach to reliability.
