Solana Network to Implement Alpenglow Upgrade Following Validator Vote
Solana�s blockchain is set for a significant performance boost after validators overwhelmingly approved the adoption of the Alpenglow consensus protocol. The decision marks a key step toward reducing transaction finality on the network from over 12 seconds to just 150 milliseconds.
Governance Process and Vote Outcome
The upgrade follows a two-week governance process where more than 52% of total staked validators participated. According to results released Tuesday, 98% of votes favored the Alpenglow protocol, with only 1% opposing and 0.69% abstaining. The necessary quorum was 33%, making the outcome decisive for the network.
Technical Upgrades: Votor and Rotor Components
- Votor: Designed to replace Solana's current TowerBFT, Votor aims to streamline consensus and shorten transaction finality.
- Rotor: Rotor will substitute the proof-of-history system, focusing on faster data transfers between validators and reducing network latency.
According to the Solana Foundation, these changes are expected to enable Web2-level responsiveness with Layer-1 blockchain finality. The improvements could open avenues for use cases that require both high speed and cryptographic assurance.
