Sharplink Gaming CEO Highlights Risks in ETH Yield Strategies
Public companies holding large amounts of Ether (ETH) could face heightened risks if the cryptocurrency market declines, according to Joseph Chalom, co-CEO of Sharplink Gaming. Speaking with Bankless in an interview on Monday, Chalom cautioned that the pursuit of higher yields on Ether might set up companies for significant losses, particularly if they underestimate the risks involved.
Chasing Yield Carries Multiple Risks
Chalom noted that companies aiming to maximize returns by seeking every additional increment of yield on their ETH holdings often overlook several associated hazards. There will be people, just like in traditional finance, who want to get that last 100 basis points of yield and think that it is riskless, he said. However, he warned that double-digit yields on Ether are linked to risks such as credit, counterparty, duration, and smart contract vulnerabilities.
The biggest risk is that people who are far behind are going to take risks that I dont think are prudent, Chalom added. He further suggested that sectors relying on such strategies might be negatively affected by companies that take excessive risks, whether through their capital-raising strategies or efforts to differentiate themselves based on yield.
ETH Treasury Holdings and Market Context
Sharplink Gaming currently holds $3.6 billion worth of ETH, making it the second-largest public holder after BitMine Immersion Technologies, which holds $8.03 billion. Data from StrategicETHReserve indicates that ETH treasury companies collectively possess about 3.6 million ETH, valued at approximately $15.46 billion.
Josip Rupena, CEO of lending platform Milo and a former Goldman Sachs analyst, compared current ETH holding firms to the entities behind collateralized debt obligations and mortgage-backed securities involved in the 2008 financial crisis, highlighting concern over similar risk exposures.

Contrasting Views on Treasury Adoption
Not all analysts see the trend as a net negative. Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan argued that Ether treasuries and holding vehicles address a key market challenge by packaging ETH in a familiar format for traditional investors. This, he said, could attract more mainstream capital and accelerate wider adoption of digital assets.
Chalom commented that the scale of ETH treasury companies is theoretically unlimited, but he cautioned against overextending in strong markets without accounting for potential downturns.
Ongoing Concerns Over Treasury Models
Broader worries about the sustainability of the crypto treasury model have intensified. On July 5, a lead analyst at Glassnode expressed doubt about the longevity of the Bitcoin treasury strategy. Meanwhile, some venture capitalists speculated that only a few strong BTC treasury firms will survive long term, with others at risk of entering a death spiral if market prices fall close to their net asset value.
At the time of publication, Ether traded at $4,327, according to CoinMarketCap data.
