Phoenix Wallet Integrates Taproot Channels for Cost Savings

Phoenix Wallet, a Bitcoin wallet with Lightning Network integration, has released a new version that introduces Taproot channels. According to the development team, this update aims to lower on-chain transaction fees by up to 20% while enhancing efficiency and privacy for users.

How Taproot Channels Lower Costs

Bitcoin on-chain transactions require users to pay fees to miners for each operation. Phoenix Wallets latest release leverages Taproot, a protocol upgrade activated in 2021, to make these transactions more efficient. With Taproot-compatible addresses, channel transactions require less data, resulting in smaller transaction sizes and reduced fees.

  • Taproot channels reduce the visible data on the blockchain.
  • Transactions appear similar to regular P2TR (Pay-to-Taproot) transactions unless the channel closes forcibly.

This approach both cuts costs and improves privacy by making Taproot channel activity indistinguishable from standard Taproot transactions while active.

Efficiency and Privacy Improvements

Taproots upgrade to Bitcoin allows multiple spending conditions to be combined into a single public key. This streamlines spending and verification, using less space per transaction. Phoenix Wallets integration means users can open and operate Lightning channels more privately and affordably, benefitting from the privacy upgrades and the 20% fee discount.

Additional Features and Roadmap

The new release, version 2.7.0 for Android and iOS and 0.7.0 for servers, also enables users to manage multiple wallets from one device. Looking forward, the Phoenix team plans to implement V3 transactions and zero-fee channel commitments. V3 transactions are a proposed update designed to optimize block space further, whereas zero-fee commitments will allow users to keep payment channels open without regular fee adjustments due to network congestion.

These upgrades are intended to provide a smoother, more cost-effective experience for those using Bitcoin and Lightning Network through Phoenix Wallet.
