OpenAI Reaches $500 Billion Valuation in Private Stock Sale

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has become the worlds most valuable startup, securing a $500 billion valuation after a recent secondary share sale. The development underscores a growing interest in AI, alongside increasing links between artificial intelligence and the blockchain sector.

Details of the Transaction

According to Bloomberg, OpenAI employeesboth current and formersold $6.6 billion in shares to a group of prominent investors. The round included contributions from Thrive Capital, SoftBank Group Corp., Dragoneer Investment Group, Abu Dhabis MGX, and T. Rowe Price.

This valuation has propelled OpenAI ahead of other major private companies. Notably, it now exceeds Elon Musk's SpaceX, which holds a market capitalization of about $400 billion. Other large-scale technology startups such as ByteDance and Anthropic are valued at $220 billion and $183 billion, respectively.

Comparison with Crypto Industry Leaders

The scale of OpenAIs valuation places it far above the biggest firms in the cryptocurrency space. For reference, Coinbase, the leading publicly traded crypto exchange, is currently valued at approximately $89 billion. Other significant crypto entities, including Ripple, Circle, and Binance, remain below the $100 billion threshold.

  • OpenAI: $500 billion
  • SpaceX: $400 billion
  • ByteDance: $220 billion
  • Anthropic: $183 billion
  • Coinbase: $89 billion

Tether, the issuer of the largest dollar-pegged stablecoin, may be the crypto company closest to matching these valuations. Artemis CEO Jon Ma recently suggested that Tether could reach around $515 billion if it were to become a public company, which would position it among the worlds largest public enterprises. However, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino remained cautious, suggesting the figure was conservative but reiterating there is no intention to pursue a public listing.

AI and Blockchain: Emerging Synergies

The milestone highlights growing synergy between AI and blockchain technologies as both emerge as critical parts of digital infrastructure. Executives, including Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz, have noted the potential for AI agents to drive future financial systems. Recent research from CEX.io indicates that over 70% of stablecoin transactions in late 2025 are already conducted by bots and automated agents.

Galaxy Digital is also entering the AI infrastructure space, having invested to accelerate its Helios AI datacenter project in Texas. The facility is expected to generate more than $1 billion in annual revenue, providing high-performance computing resources.

Challenges Ahead

Rapid AI advancement is raising concerns about energy demand. At a recent industry event in Singapore, Akash founder Greg Osuri warned that AIs computing requirements could soon outstrip the capabilities of existing power grids. He advocated for sustainable solutions, such as decentralized systems for training AI models.

As AI valuations continue to set new records, the intersection of artificial intelligence and blockchain remains a focus for both investors and industry leaders.
