OceanPal Unveils SovereignAI After $120M Fundraise
OceanPal Inc., a shipping company listed on Nasdaq, has raised $120 million via a private investment in public equity (PIPE) to establish its new subsidiary, SovereignAI. The move signals OceanPal's pivot toward blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, centered around the NEAR Protocol.
SovereignAI's Role and Strategic Focus
SovereignAI will focus on commercializing the NEAR Protocol and advancing AI infrastructure. The project aims to implement a crypto treasury strategy, with plans to acquire up to 10% of the total supply of NEAR (NEAR) tokens. This strategy is expected to provide public market exposure to the NEAR token and facilitate the development of AI applications on the blockchain platform.
- NEAR Protocol, established in 2020, serves as a layer-1 blockchain supporting AI-driven applications.
- NEAR allows AI agents to interact, manage assets, and operate autonomously across networks.
The partnership with the NEAR Foundation is based on the shared goal of promoting "universal AI sovereignty," according to both organizations. Under their agreement, OceanPal's SovereignAI becomes a prominent vehicle for integrating blockchain and AI technologies.
Leadership Changes and Industry Collaboration
The announcement coincides with key leadership updates at OceanPal. Sal Ternullo, formerly of State Street, has been appointed co-CEO, while David Schwed, with prior experience at BNY Mellon, Galaxy, and Robinhood, assumes the role of chief operating officer.
Meanwhile, Illia Polosukhin, co-founder and CEO of the NEAR Foundation, will join the SovereignAI advisory board. The board will also include Richard Muirhead of Fabric Ventures and Lukasz Kaiser, a founding member of OpenAI, bringing industry expertise to the initiative.
Trends in AI Agents and Blockchain Integration
AI agentsautonomous systems capable of decision-making and action without direct human inputare increasingly merging with blockchain networks. These agents use distributed ledgers to manage assets, verify actions, and participate as self-governing actors in digital economies.
The crypto sector has seen notable activity in AI agent adoption. Recent Dune Analytics data showed Coinbase's AI-ready payments protocol, introduced in May, recorded a surge of more than 10,000% in transaction volume over the past month. Companies like Cloudflare have also disclosed plans to support instant AI-led transactions across their platforms.
With SovereignAI's launch and its alignment with the NEAR Protocol, OceanPal enters a growing market segment where artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies converge to enable advanced financial tools and decentralized platforms.
