Morgan Stanley has become the first major U.S. bank to offer access to Bitcoin funds for its wealth management clients, marking a milestone in traditional finance's adoption of cryptocurrencies. The move, announced on March 17, 2021, follows growing demand from high-net-worth individuals seeking exposure to digital assets.
According to internal communications and regulatory filings, the investment bank will allow access to three Bitcoin-focused funds. Two of these funds are operated by Galaxy Digital, while the third is a joint offering from FS Investments and NYDIG. The bank will initially limit access to clients with at least $2 million in assets and a high risk tolerance.
Clients will be permitted to invest up to 2.5% of their total net worth through these funds. Financial advisors at Morgan Stanley must complete training and certifications before offering these products, ensuring compliance and alignment with the bank's fiduciary responsibilities.
This strategic entry reflects a shift in Wall Street's stance toward crypto, transitioning from skepticism to cautious integration. Although Morgan Stanley will not directly handle Bitcoin or custodial services, the availability of third-party fund access opens a path for traditional investors to participate in the crypto economy.
At the time of the announcement, Bitcoin was trading near all-time highs, with increasing attention from institutional investors, corporate treasuries, and hedge funds. Morgan Stanley's move may encourage other financial giants to explore similar offerings in the near future.
