Korean Retail Investors Shift Focus From Tesla to Crypto Equities
South Korean retail investors are moving substantial capital out of Tesla shares and into US-listed cryptocurrency-related stocks. This transition signals changing global investment preferences and is closely watched by the financial industry.
Selling Pressure on Tesla Amid Disappointing Performance
Individual Korean traders previously held approximately $21.9 billion in Tesla, making it their largest foreign equity holding. However, rising concerns about Tesla�s fundamentals and leadership, including intensifying competition from Chinese electric vehicle makers and recent stock declines tied to CEO Elon Musk�s controversies, have led to broad selling. According to Mirae Asset Securities, Tesla�s prospects in autonomous driving and robotics remain, but increased competition and reduced sales have dampened expectations. This retreat extended beyond common stock, as double-leveraged Tesla products saw outflows of $554 million in August, the largest since early 2024.
Increased Investment in US Crypto-Related Stocks
Meanwhile, Korean investors have sharply increased their exposure to US crypto companies, purchasing over $12 billion in related shares so far this year. In August, Korean traders bought:
- $426 million in Bitmine Immersion Technologies Inc.
- $226 million in Circle stock
- $183 million in Coinbase shares
Korean investors also allocated $282 million to a double-leveraged Ethereum ETF that month, using traditional equity products to gain leveraged cryptocurrency exposure.
Broader Adoption and Regulatory Changes Fuel Demand
The trend reflects a broader shift within South Korea, where about one in five adults now invests in digital assets. Among people aged 20 to 50, crypto ownership reaches up to 27%. The ongoing development of clearer regulatory frameworks for stablecoins, security token offerings, and crypto ETFs has boosted investor confidence and demand for cryptocurrency-linked investments available through local brokerages.

Korean retail investors are significant foreign holders of US equities, with their collective actions influencing global capital flows. Their shift toward crypto stocks is prompting analysis across Wall Street, as their concentrated investments can cause noticeable market movements, especially in sectors undergoing rapid change.
