Institutional Participants Increase Purchases of Ether
The demand for ether from institutional channelsincluding exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and corporate treasurieshas grown significantly in recent weeks, according to analysis from onchain options platform Derive.xyz. This trend is shaping the supply landscape heading into the fourth quarter, despite volatile near-term market flows.
ETF and Corporate Treasury Accumulation
Nicholas Forster, founder of Derive, reported that ether ETFs collectively added about 250,000 ETH last week, increasing their total holdings to approximately 6.74 million ETH. In parallel, companies categorized as strategic ETH reserves (SERs)such as BitMine Immersionacquired roughly 330,000 ETH during the same period. Current SER balances now represent nearly 4% of the total ether supply, closely trailing the 5.5% held by ETFs. Forster noted that, with anticipated interest rate cuts, SER allocations could reach between 6% and 10% of supply by year-end.
Volatility and Derivatives Positioning
Option markets have shown a decline in short-term risk pricing. Short-dated implied volatility for ether options decreased to 63% from 75% over the past week, suggesting traders expect a steadier and more gradual price movement. Derives probability model assigns a 30% chance that ETH will reach $6,000 by the end of October, rising to a 44% likelihood by year-end.
Mixed Fund Flows and Market Dynamics
Simultaneously, U.S. spot ETH ETFs have seen episodic outflows. One recent session recorded about $135.5 million in redemptions, according to The Block. Timothy Misir, Head of Research at BRN, noted that ongoing accumulation by corporate treasuriesincluding buyers like SharpLinkmay be partially offsetting these ETF outflows.
Misir also observed that near-term price sensitivity is currently more influenced by derivatives activity. He identified a price pivot area between $4,400 and $4,500, with technical resistance at $4,800 and support around $4,350. As of Wednesday, ether was trading near $4,320, down close to 2% on the day and 6% over the week.
Growing Role of Treasuries and Staking
Corporate treasury accumulation has emerged as a key trend this summer. Public companies' ether treasuries tracked by The Block have risen, with entities like SharpLink standing out for their acquisition activity. Some firms have also shared significant staking strategies involving more than $100 million in capital. These moves have contributed to tightening available supply, even as ETF demand fluctuates and options markets see reduced near-term volatility.
Outlook Remains Mixed Amid Macro Uncertainty
Both Derive and BRN cautioned that near-term market conditions are still mixed. ETF flows remain inconsistent, and macroeconomic drivers such as interest rate expectations continue to influence risk appetite. While institutional accumulation is apparent, analysts suggest that two-way trading could persist until trends in flows and broader macro data converge.
