Charles Hoskinson Discusses the Future of DeFi on Bitcoin

Charles Hoskinson, founder of the Cardano blockchain, shared his perspective on decentralized finance (DeFi) within the Bitcoin ecosystem in an interview published by CoinDesk on September 9, 2025. Hoskinson described Bitcoin DeFi as a 'sleeping giant,' with the potential for significant growth in the coming years.

Bitcoin DeFi's Growth Potential

Hoskinson predicted that, within three to five years, value locked in decentralized financial applications on Bitcoin could reach hundreds of billions of dollars. He suggested this could exceed the current market capitalization of Ethereum. The Cardano founder also said that sovereign wealth funds and major financial firms, such as BlackRock, may eventually participate in on-chain finance using Bitcoin.

Key Technological and Ecosystem Challenges

According to Hoskinson, a central challenge for DeFi expansion on Bitcoin is the absence of an executive authority to coordinate and drive the ecosystem's growth. He compared the opportunity to discovering a 'virgin territory,' suggesting that Bitcoin has unique potential compared to competing networks such as Solana, Ethereum, Aptos, and Sui, which may have reached limits in adoption. He believes Bitcoin could surpass these platforms in DeFi not just through scale, but due to its perceived superiority.

  • Essential technical questions remain, such as how to build a decentralized stablecoin and establish robust decentralized exchanges on Bitcoin.
  • Hoskinson notes the need for technologies tailored to Bitcoin's network and user base, especially for those committed to its principles.

Possible Solutions and Existing Projects

Hoskinson highlighted existing attempts to bring DeFi to Bitcoin, including solutions built on sidechains and layer 2 platforms, such as Stacks. However, he characterized these projects as fragmented. He believes that Cardano's ecosystem and new initiatives like Midnight could help integrate and unify Bitcoin-related DeFi efforts.

The interview follows previous comments by Hoskinson on the challenges and opportunities for DeFi growth using Bitcoin. As debates continue, developers are considering technical, user experience, and governance factors that could shape the evolution of the sector. Bitcoin's future in decentralized finance remains a focus of discussion among industry leaders and participants.
