Google Unveils AgentPayments Protocol for Crypto and Stablecoin Transactions

Google announced a new payment system, AgentPayments Protocol (AP2), on September 16. The initiative enables users, merchants, and service providers to perform transactions using both stablecoins and cryptoassets, alongside traditional payment options. The system integrates artificial intelligence to streamline online payments and transaction automation.

AI Agents Set to Transform Digital Payments

AP2 is designed as a user-agnostic protocol. It leverages AI agents to execute transactions on behalf of users, supporting purchases through a variety of payment methods. The protocol aims to address new challenges arising from autonomous payment processes, which differ from the standard human-initiated transactions prevalent today.

  • AI agents can perform delegated purchases, such as buying event tickets as soon as they become available.
  • Users can give detailed, auditable commandscalled mandatesthat set spending limits, deadlines, and specific purchasing criteria.
  • The system creates secure, immutable records of each transaction, supporting transparency and accountability.

Crypto Integration and Broad Industry Cooperation

Google has signaled that AP2 will support not only traditional payment systems like credit and debit cards, but also digital assets. This includes possible integration with crypto exchanges, the Ethereum network, other blockchain protocols such as Sui, non-custodial wallets, and potentially Bitcoin via compatible payment rails.

Major industry playersincluding American Express, Mastercard, PayPal, Payoneer, and Revolutare expected to contribute to this payment ecosystem. The involvement of organizations from the cryptocurrency sector could further expand AP2's range, supporting both fiat and digital currencies.

AI-Powered Commands Enable Personalized Purchases

With AP2, users will be able to instruct their personal AI agents through natural language commands. These agents can search for products, negotiate terms, and execute purchases tailored to user preferences, such as budget constraints or product specifications.

Googles approach aims to simplify both real-time and delegated online purchases, enhancing user convenience while maintaining transaction security. AP2's introduction marks a significant step in the integration of AI and cryptocurrency within mainstream payment systems.
