Ethereum Foundation Initiates Major Ether Sale to Fund Ecosystem

The Ethereum Foundation has announced the sale of approximately $43 million worth of Ether (ETH) as part of a strategy to support ongoing research, development, and grants across the Ethereum ecosystem. The sale will be executed in smaller, incremental transactions over several weeks, according to a Tuesday post from the Foundation.

Incremental Sales and Treasury Policy

The group stated that the Ether conversion process would use centralized exchanges and focus on distributing sales to avoid market disruptions. This approach comes just days after the Foundation temporarily paused new grant applications in order to reform its grant processes. The Foundation reported awarding over $32 million in grants as of the first quarter of 2025, with ongoing focus on community and educational efforts.

In June, the Ethereum Foundation detailed its treasury strategy, which involves regular assessments of their fiat assets and setting a schedule for ETH sales based on treasury needs for the following quarter.

  • Previous sales include transfers to SharpLink Gaming and the sale of 2,795 ETH (approximately $12.7 million) across two transactions.
  • A notable historical sale of 100,000 ETH in December 2020 had a prolonged market impact at the time.

Impact on Market and Other Large Purchases

At the time of the announcement, ETH traded at $4,326, marking a 23% increase over the previous 30 days.
Other major market activity includes Yunfeng Financial Group's announcement of a 10,000 ETH purchase on the open market, unrelated to the Foundation's sale. Additionally, Ether Machine acquired 150,000 ETH as it prepares for an anticipated Nasdaq listing, bringing its total holdings to over 345,000 ETH (valued at approximately $1.5 billion).

Industry figures, including Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin, have commented on institutional adoption of Ether, suggesting it could strengthen ETH's position in the digital asset market. Ethers all-time high surpassed $4,870 in August, amid significant commentary from U.S. Federal Reserve officials regarding monetary policy shifts.
