Elon Musk Announces Plans for Privacy-Focused Messaging Platform X Chat

Elon Musk is preparing to launch a new messaging service, X Chat, designed to provide users with greater privacy and security. The app aims to compete directly with established platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, with an expected rollout in the coming months.

Focus on Security and Data Privacy

According to Musk, X Chat will be released both as part of the existing X platform and as a standalone application. Speaking during a recent podcast, Musk said X Chat is built from the ground up with a renewed messaging infrastructure. He emphasized that the platform will operate without advertising hooks, which he argues are present in competitors like WhatsApp and can potentially compromise user privacy.

If [a platform] knows enough about what youre texting to know what ads to show you, thats a lot of information, Musk said. He also warned that these mechanisms could be exploited by hackers to access private messages.

Comparison With Existing Messaging Apps

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, states that its messages are end-to-end encrypted using the Signal Protocol, covering text, voice messages, media, and documents. However, metadatasuch as who users communicate with and how oftenis not encrypted. WhatsApp does not automatically encrypt backup copies of chat histories, and the companys policies allow information sharing across Metas suite of products if users integrate their experience.

  • Musk claims X Chat will avoid such advertising-focused integrations.
  • He states the service aims to replace Twitters direct messaging stack with a fully encrypted platform.
  • Features will include texting, file sharing, audio, and video calls.
  • X Chat will be accessible both within the X app and independently.

Launch Timeline and Future Outlook

Musk said he hopes to launch X Chat within a few months, though the exact release date has not been confirmed. The development highlights the growing demand for privacy and security in personal messaging tools as competition intensifies among major technology companies.
