El Salvador Restructures Bitcoin Holdings to Address Quantum Threats

El Salvador has moved its national Bitcoin reserve into 14 separate wallet addresses, a decision designed to minimize potential risks posed by future advances in quantum computing. The announcement was made by the country's Bitcoin Office on X on Friday. Each new address now stores up to 500 BTC.

Motivation Linked to Quantum Security Concerns

The Bitcoin Office emphasized that spreading holdings across multiple wallets lowers the impact of any potential quantum attack. According to the office, once Bitcoin is sent from an address, its public key is revealed, which could become vulnerable to quantum computing attacks if the technology becomes advanced enough.

Quantum computers could, in theory, break Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography, placing more than 6 million Bitcoinvalued at around $650 billionat risk, according to quantum research firms. However, experts note that the technology needed to threaten current cryptography is not yet available. For example, no quantum algorithm has managed to crack even a small 3-bit key so far, while Bitcoin uses 256-bit keys.

Details of the Bitcoin Reallocation

Previously, El Salvador's 6,274 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $678 million, were held in a single address. Blockchain records confirmed the funds were redistributed to 14 addresses on Friday. This move follows recent scrutiny from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which claimed El Salvador has not added to its Bitcoin holdings since February. The Bitcoin Office has not commented directly on the IMF report but continues to share updates on its Bitcoin activities.

Industry and Policy Context

Blockchain experts, including Michael Saylor of MicroStrategy, have debated the seriousness of quantum threats to Bitcoin. Saylor recently stated that if quantum computing becomes a real concern, Bitcoin's core developers and hardware providers are likely to work on effective fixes.

Meanwhile, El Salvador's relationship with the IMF remains under negotiation. In December 2024, the country received a new deal from the IMF, which included terms regarding its Bitcoin policies. There is ongoing discussion between the IMF and El Salvador about these conditions.

  • El Salvador split its Bitcoin reserve across 14 new addresses.
  • The move aims to reduce risk from future quantum computing threats.
  • Quantum computers are not currently able to threaten Bitcoin addresses.
  • The redistribution follows scrutiny from the IMF regarding Bitcoin purchases.
