Curve DAO Explores New Funding Mechanism with Credit Line Proposal
The Curve Finance decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) is currently voting on a proposal that could introduce new sources of income for its users and the wider ecosystem. The initiative, introduced by Curve founder Michael Egorov in August, centers around a $60 million credit line in crvUSD for a mechanism called Yield Basis.
Key Details of the Proposal
Voting on the proposal began Wednesday. As of this writing, 97% of votes cast support the plan. The Yield Basis mechanism would allow users to stake CRV tokens and receive veCRV (vote-escrowed CRV) in return, generating income for stakers. According to the proposal, Yield Basis would distribute between 35% and 65% of its value to veCRV holders and allocate an additional 25% to Curves ecosystem.
The credit line would be leveraged to create pools for three assets: Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), cbBTC, and tBTC. Yield Basis plans to both borrow and create a supply sink, which Egorov says could enable the total value locked (TVL) and debt in Yield Basis pools to scale without affecting the price stability, or peg, of crvUSD.
Potential Impact and Sector Context
Curve Finance remains a significant platform within decentralized finance (DeFi), with $2.4 billion in TVL as of Thursday, according to DefiLlama. However, this figure represents a substantial decline from its peak of approximately $24.2 billion in January 2022. The protocol has faced several challenges, including security threats like Domain Name System (DNS) attacks.
Across the wider DeFi sector, TVL has rebounded in 2025 after a subdued period between mid-2022 and late 2023. Total DeFi TVL reached $163.2 billion on Thursday, marking a 40.9% increase from the start of the year. Competition among protocols also continues to intensify. Aave, with $42.5 billion TVL, recently expanded to new blockchains and is preparing a new version launch. Other projects, such as Ethena, have seen growth tied to regulatory developments like the passage of the GENIUS Act in the United States.
Next Steps
If approved, the Curve DAOs credit line proposal could provide additional incentives for stakers while potentially boosting Curves position in the recovering DeFi market. The outcome of the current vote, along with future developments, will likely influence the direction of incentives and liquidity within the Curve ecosystem.
