Market Watch

Crypto Investment Funds Record Significant Weekly Outflows

Digital asset investment products saw $1.43 billion in outflows last week, reversing two consecutive weeks of inflows, according to a Monday report from CoinShares. The change comes as leading cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ether experienced notable price declines.

Market Recap

Bitcoin dropped from above $116,000 on August 18 to $112,000 by the end of the trading week. Ether also fell below $4,100 on Tuesday after starting the week near $4,250, based on data from CoinGecko.

The outflows marked the second-largest weekly withdrawal on record for spot Ether products, with nearly $430 million withdrawn on Tuesday alone, according to SoSoValue.

Investor Sentiment and Market Drivers

CoinShares head of research, James Butterfill, noted that the $1.43 billion withdrawn from crypto funds was the largest since March 2025. He attributed the sell-off to increasingly divided market sentiment. Early in the week, concerns over the Federal Reserves policy led to $2 billion in outflows from crypto funds. However, sentiment improved after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's remarks at the Jackson Hole Symposium, which were perceived as more dovish. This triggered $594 million in inflows later in the week.

Ether markets reflected the changing sentiment more markedly, experiencing a sharp mid-week recovery and ending with $440 million in outflows for the week. Bitcoin exchange-traded products saw larger outflows, totaling more than $1 billion.

Year-to-Date Trends and Sector Flows

Butterfill observed a notable shift in investor behavior compared to month-to-date flows. Bitcoin experienced $1 billion in monthly outflows, while Ether attracted $2.5 billion in inflows. Year-to-date, inflows into Ethereum products represent 26% of total assets under management, versus 11% for Bitcoin.

Other digital assets posted mixed results. XRP saw $25 million in inflows, Solana gained $12 million, while Sui and Toncoin registered outflows of $13 million and $1.5 million respectively.

Outlook

The past weeks market movements indicate volatility and shifting sentiment in crypto investment products. Analysts and investors will be watching upcoming macroeconomic signals for their potential impact on fund flows and digital asset prices.
