Coinbase's Base Considers Native Token Launch

Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase, is exploring the launch of its own native token. Jesse Pollak, the creator of Base, disclosed the preliminary plans during the recent BaseCamp event. According to Pollak, the possible introduction of a token aims to support decentralization and expand opportunities for builders and creators within the ecosystem.

Early Stages of Development

Base stated that discussions around the token remain in the early phases. No specific details regarding timing, design, or governance have been disclosed yet. The network emphasized that further updates will come as plans evolve.

About the Base Network

Launched in 2023, Base operates as a layer-2 blockchain built on top of Ethereum. It allows for offchain transaction processing, which reduces congestion and cost before final settlement on Ethereum. Over the past year, Base has emerged as the most widely used Ethereum layer-2, with data from Token Terminal reporting high numbers of monthly active addresses.

Strengthening Cross-Chain Interoperability

Alongside the token news, Pollak announced the release of an open-source bridge to the Solana blockchain. This tool enables users to transfer assets between Base and Solana, expanding developers access to broader liquidity and enhancing interoperability. Pollak emphasized that Base aims to function as a "bridge, not an island," supporting a more connected and versatile blockchain ecosystem.
