Project Spotlights

Circle Expands USDC to zkSync Layer 2 Network

Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has launched a native version of USDC on the zkSync Layer 2 network. The move aims to improve the speed and efficiency of payments and decentralized finance (DeFi) transactions on Ethereum's scaling solution.

Streamlining Digital Dollar Transfers

With this launch, users can now mint, redeem, and transfer USDC directly on zkSync. Previously, most USDC on zkSync was bridged from Ethereum, resulting in "bridged" tokens labeled as USDC.e. Bridged assets often lack the same support, creating friction for users and developers.

Access to Fast and Low-Cost Transactions

  • zkSync is an Ethereum Layer 2 network based on zero-knowledge proofs, designed to offer lower transaction fees and faster settlement compared to Ethereum mainnet.
  • Direct integration of native USDC supports use cases such as payments, remittances, trading, and DeFi protocols on zkSync.

Circle stated that the rollout allows businesses or developers using its programmable wallet platform to leverage USDC instantly within zkSync applications, settlement, and payment services.

Broader Effort to Expand USDC Utility

The addition of native USDC on Layer 2 networks is part of Circle's broader strategy to improve stablecoin utility and access. The company has previously launched native USDC on other Ethereum Layer 2 solutions, such as Arbitrum and Optimism.

Market participants expect greater liquidity, lower settlement times, and improved interoperability as adoption of stablecoins on Layer 2 networks grows.
