Leadership Change at the Presidential Crypto Advisory Council

Bo Hines, leader of the Presidential Council of Advisers for Digital Assets, is set to leave his role and return to the private sector, according to a report from journalist Eleanor Terrett. Hines will be succeeded by his deputy, Patrick Witt. The transition marks a significant change in leadership for the White House's key crypto advisory group.

Background on Bo Hines and the Crypto Council

Appointed by President Trump in December 2024, Hines led the council known as the "crypto council." He often described the office as an intermediary between White House policy, the crypto industry, and Congress. Three months into his tenure, Hines reported meetings with 150 industry figures. He stated his commitment to supporting the U.S. crypto ecosystem as he departs for the private sector. Hines will stay on as an advisor assisting White House AI and crypto lead David Sacks with AI initiatives, according to Terrett.

Patrick Witt Named as Successor

Patrick Witt, the anticipated new head of the crypto council, previously served in administrative positions during the Trump administration, including Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. In 2021, Witt ran for Congress in Georgia and received backing from tech investor Peter Thiel, though he later shifted to a campaign for State Insurance Commissioner, which was unsuccessful. Witt later returned to public service as the deputy director of the crypto council and acting director at the Department of Defense's Office of Strategic Capital, focusing on emerging technologies. He does not have direct experience in the crypto industry. Like Hines, Witt played college football, serving as quarterback at Yale and signing briefly with the New Orleans Saints.

Industry Context and Council's Role

The Presidential Council of Advisers for Digital Assets serves as a liaison between government agencies and the evolving U.S. crypto landscape. Leadership changes at the council may affect the direction of crypto policy and government-industry dialogue as new regulatory frameworks continue to develop.
