Bitcoin ETPs Control 7% of Total Supply
Exchange-traded products (ETPs) for bitcoin have surpassed a significant milestone, now holding more than 1.47 million BTC. This amount represents roughly 7% of the cryptocurrency's 21 million coin supply. Data from HODL15Capital shared Monday highlights how United States-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have acquired the majority of these holdings.
US-Based Funds Lead Global Accumulation
Of the global ETP total, US-based spot bitcoin ETFs now account for over 1.29 million BTC. BlackRocks iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) holds the largest share at 746,810 BTC, followed by the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) with just under 199,500 BTC. Since December 31, 2024, global Bitcoin ETPs increased their holdings by more than 170,000 BTC, equivalent to about $18.7 billion at current prices.
Shifting Demand and Market Behavior
Despite this growth, recent trends show weakening demand for Bitcoin ETPs. According to CoinShares, global Bitcoin ETPs registered a net outflow of $301 million during August. Conversely, Ethereum funds reported inflows of $3.95 billion for the same period, indicating a shift in investor preference from bitcoin to ether.
On-chain activity supports this trend. On Monday, a large bitcoin investorcommonly known as a whaleexchanged 4,000 BTC for 96,859 ether in a 12-hour span. Data from Arkham confirmed that nine such whales have realized bitcoin profits and rotated into Ethereum in recent days.
Market Outlook and Regulatory Developments
These changes occur as bitcoin enters September, a historically slow period for its price. Another factor is regulatory uncertainty: as many as 92 crypto-related ETFs are awaiting decisions from the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Some anticipated funds, including those tracking Solana and XRP, are expected to receive SEC rulings in October.
Research and analyst commentary suggest that bitcoins price could remain stable, or even face volatility depending on next steps from the Federal Reserve and overall market activity. Delphi Digital indicated that if bitcoin rallies before the Fed cuts rates, it may face a sharp correction afterward. Absent major movement or speculation, the asset could continue on a stable course.
Conclusion
The 1.47 million BTC held in ETPs demonstrates continued institutional interest, but shifting fund flows and regulatory uncertainties may define bitcoins direction in the coming months.
