Binance Selects BBVA as Independent Custodian for Customer Assets
Binance has partnered with BBVA, one of Spains largest banks, to act as an independent custodian for client funds. This measure follows efforts to rebuild trust in centralized crypto investing after high-profile collapses in the industry. The arrangement was confirmed in a Financial Times report quoting sources familiar with the development.
Bank Custody Offers Bank-Backed Collateral
The agreement allows Binance users to custody their assets with BBVA. This provides heightened security and reassurance through bank-backed collateral. Sources said Binance users funds will be held in US Treasurys by BBVA, then accepted as margin for trading on the Binance platform. The move aims to reduce counterparty risk commonly associated with exchange custody. Binance has also set up custody partnerships with Switzerlands Sygnum Bank and FlowBank.
Traditional Finance Meets Crypto Security
Industry observers note that the participation of established financial institutions could make custody solutions safer and more regulated. Such partnerships may encourage more institutional investors to engage with crypto markets. BBVAs strong brand recognition in Europe is also viewed as a trust factor compared to Binances prior custodians.
Recent Changes Benefit European Users
On Thursday, Binance introduced a new service to help users convert crypto to fiat and withdraw directly to a Mastercard. This option is available in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom, allowing for near-instant access to funds. The change is intended to streamline off-ramping of digital assets for users in these regions.
Growing Demand for Secure Custody
Custody of digital assets by reputable banks has become a priority since events such as the FTX collapse, which restricted user access and prompted regulatory intervention. Some exchanges, like WazirX in India, recently froze withdrawals, causing concern among investors. Binances move to collaborate with well-known banks may help mitigate these risks and foster greater confidence in centralized platforms.
