Crypto Market Faces Sharp Decline Amid Geopolitical and Internal Pressures

The crypto market recorded a significant decline on Friday following the announcement of a 100% US tariff on Chinese imports. Retail investors were quick to link the downturn to President Donald Trump's tariff statement, but analysts suggest that recent market losses are a result of multiple factors.

Retail Investors Seek Simple Explanations

According to a Saturday report from Santiment, many retail traders attributed the fall exclusively to the US-China tariff news, as they often look for clear events to explain market volatility. Social media discussions surged with speculation connecting the market drop to the geopolitical announcement.

Structural Weaknesses Deepen the Slide

Analysts highlighted that the catalyst was not the only cause. Many pointed to "excessive leverage and risk" in the crypto market. This was reflected in the liquidation of approximately $16.7 billion in long positions, compared with $2.5 billion in shortsa nearly 7-to-1 ratioafter Bitcoin dropped more than 10% within 24 hours. On Binance, the BTC/USDT futures pair bottomed near $102,000 after the news broke.

Sentiment Shifts and Market Outlook

Market sentiment plummeted after the decline. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index dropped to a "Fear" level of 27 on Saturday, down sharply from "Greed" at 64 just a day earlier. According to Santiment, this shift marks the lowest sentiment level in almost six months and reflects growing anxiety about market prospects.

Santiment reported that the evolving US-China relationship will continue to influence retail trading behavior. If diplomatic talks between Trump and Xi yield constructive outcomes, retail confidence in crypto could recover. However, further escalation in trade tensions could push traders towards more pessimistic price forecasts, particularly for Bitcoin.
